5. Business and politics in the global arena

The global arena provides new and exciting opportunities for business; it also presents managers with a much more complex and intimidating range of challenges than ever before. With rapid globalisation, businesses can no longer count on traditional clients and suppliers as competitors stream across borders and markets change radically. Thus this course aims to equip students with a deeper knowledge of the diverse cultural, economic, legal and political environments and a better grasp of the strategic directions feasible. It aims to foster the ability to understand and manage globalised marketing, operations, finance and human resources that are becoming critical to large, medium and small businesses alike.

By the end of this course students are able to:

  • Understand some of the pertinent issues involved in debates about the benefits and problems of globalisation.
  • Analyse the interplay between countries? political, economic and cultural differences and their implications for management in the global marketplace.
  • Think critically about policy issues related to cross-border trade, investment and regional integration.
  • Evaluate strategic alternatives in international operations, marketing, finance, and human resource functions.
