11. Corporate Finance
As can be derived from the title, this course is about financial decisions
made by a special type of firm: a corporation. A corporation is supposed to
maximize the market value of its stocks, but it also has to obey the law,
respect ethical norms and contribute to social goals. Concentrating on
corporations enables us to focus on the decisions made by the largest and most
influential firms in the world including multinationals such as General Motors,
IBM, Kodak, Mitsubishi, Shell and Unilever.
Corporate finance is a relevant subject of study because finance has to do with
money and nowadays almost everything has a price ticket. The course aims at
learning objectives such as to provide the student with the required knowledge
and ability concerning the
- terminology, concepts, techniques, models and theories of corporate
finance,
- relationship between risk and return,
- (multi-currency) international transactions of a corporation,
- as well as to provide the student with the necessary practical skills
to:
- handle the relevant instruments in order to analyse, select and
monitor value-maximizing projects,
- manage working capital components such as cash, bank accounts,
accounts receivable and inventories.
